Potrero Hill gets its name from the Spanish word for “pasture” and has retained much of its understated charm despite remarkable growth over the past few years. Located on the eastern edge of San Francisco, this neighborhood offers stunning views of the bay and skyline with a small park and several cultural venues and art institutions. Formerly known as Potrero Nuevo, it stretches from Potrero Avenue all the way to Route 101 across the area below 20th Street. It lies north of Bayview-Hunters Point, east of Mission District, and south of Showplace Square and South of Market (SoMa). Potrero Hill is highly connected with easy access to a Caltrain station and the 101 and 280 freeways. It is bordered by Townsend and 7th Streets to the north, Potrero Avenue along the 101 freeway to the east, the 280 on the west, and Cesar Chavez Street to the south. The bordering neighborhoods are Mission District on the west, Dogpatch on the east, and SoMa to the north. Dogpatch was originally part of Potrero Hill but is now recognized as a separate community.
Potrero Hill offers an eclectic mix of real estate options. The northern edge of the neighborhood is lined with large apartment complexes, lofts, condos, and workspaces for startups. Buyers will find more -style single-family homes and townhomes further uphill while the southern side of the hill features new construction and other real estate developments. The most coveted properties have three or more bedrooms with oversized windows and carport space. Prevalent architectural styles include Victorian and Contemporary.
